Tonight my thoughts are with the people and animals, that will be effected by the destructive path of hurricane Gustav. Many have evacuated up towards shreveport, or further to texas, alabama, tennessee, Georgia or wherever they can go to be safe. After the devestation of Katrina, it seems we are somewhat more prepared and organized this time. Animal welfare groups including The American Humane Association, ASPCA, Best Friends, Code 3, HSUS, International Fund for Animal Welfare, Noah's Wish and United Animal Nations have set up a huge mega shelter in Shreveport, Louisiana. It is located in close vicinity to the American Red Cross shelter in Shreveport, as both the people and pets wait this hurricane out, and hope for the best.
Speaking of the animals, hurricane Katrina was the largest animal rescue operation ever performed in the history of the US. Of course, there will be rescue operations in the aftermath of hurricane Gustav, but they hope by taking greater preperations more lives will be saved, both human and animal. Once the storm subsides, The American Humane's fleet of Animal Emergency Services vehicles will be performing search and rescue operations to save animals trapped in homes. In the meantime, the mega shelter workers in Shreveport will be working 12 hour shifts to care for all the dogs and cats that have been brought in thus far. In addition, to the emergency shelter in Shreveport, many shelters across the country are taking in animals that have been evacuated from the area.
Hurricane Gustav is expected to touch down as a category 3 or 4 in Vermillion Parish, Louisiana sometime on monday or tuesday.
