4 things that are a danger to your dog

4 things that are a danger to your dog...

1. Most people realize that chocolate is poisonous for dogs, due to the theobromine in it. But did you realize grapes and raisins can be as dangerous, and can cause kidney malfunction? An additional food danger to watch out for is sharp bones that can get lodged in the throat. For example, chicken bones can easily splinter, that is why it is a good idea to never give your dog chicken bones. Chicken itself is OK, as long as you are extremely careful to remove all the bones. Even if the bones do not splinter, sometimes they can get lodged in the intestine, causing serious problems.

2. Hypoglycemia in puppies is not uncommon, especially in toy breeds. It is important to monitor food intake very carefully, and make sure they are eating every few hours. Puppies burn a lot of energy playing, and it is of utmost importance they have a high quality easily digestible food. Hypoglycemia in puppies begins with them becoming listless and can eventually leads to seizures. It is a good idea to have honey or karo syrup around the house, if they seem to have hypoglycemia due to overplaying or not enough food, place some karo syrup on their gums inside the mouth. Watch carefully, and if the puppy still seems unusually listless, you may want to get them to the veterinarian.

3. Hot weather can be a danger to dogs, causing problems like heat exhaustion to burns. Do not exercise your dog in hot weather, as this can cause heat exhaustion. Some signs of this include panting, disorientation, and vomiting. Immediately get your dog into the air conditioned house, give him water, wrap him in a cool damp towel, and wipe his feet pads with rubbing alcohol. If he is not much better within 10 minutes, get him to the veterinarian. It is better not to force your dog to stay outside when temperatures exceed 85 degrees. If you must, make sure they have shade and an endless supply of water that cannot be knocked over. You might want to look into a mist attachment for your hose to keep your dog cooler as well. Do not forget about the hot pavement when walking your dog either, if you cannot stand on the pavement in bare feet, either can your dog!

4. For poisoning you can call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center hotline at 888-426-4435. There are so many toxic substances that could be dangerous to your dog, it is best to get professional help. If you feel that your dog may not be in serious trouble, take the time to call poison control, if he shows signs of distress get him into emergency right away. It is always best to ask, just to make sure. For example, if your dog gets into rat poison, he will seem ok at the time. But rat poison causes internal bleeding and would cause your dog to bleed to death over the course of several days. Take the time to dog proof your home ASAP, and make certain there are not any toxic substances your dog can get into.

Dogs Left in Cars ~ Be on the Lookout!

It is always surprising to find new stories in which a dog has been left in the car. You hear the same old cliche of, "I was only going to be gone for a minute." It is the same tired excuse when people leave their babies in the car, or leave a two year old swimming alone. "Well gosh, it's too bad my dog is dead now but I just had to pick up some bread on the way home! Then we read about them on the news, and are disgusted by their idiocy. If the temperature outside is about 72 degrees, it won't take long for the inside of your car to heat up to 116 degrees. Even if you decide to crack the window, it will still be at least 20 degrees hotter in your car.

I am aware that visitors of CoCo the Blogging Dog are more intelligent than that, which brings me to my summer challenge. What I am asking is that when you are out, stay aware of your surroundings and keep an eye out for any dogs locked in cars. If you find one, please call 911 or the police immediately, and stick around to be a witness. Be sure to write down their license plate as well, that way if they come out of the store before the police arrive, you will still be able to file a report and the police will be able to find them. If the dog is in serious distress, I will leave it up to you to decide if you want to break the window. I would as a last resort, and I doubt that the police would find fault with this, if it were a matter of life or death. Be on the lookout!

Samples of Flint River Ranch Dog Food and Greenies in my Mailbox!

Did you read the posts from June 10 to June 16, describing free dog food samples you can request on the Internet? As I was blogging about the free dog food samples, I was requesting them. I received my first packages in the mail today, Greenies and Flint River Ranch dog food. I've decided to write a short review on each one.

With the Greenies dog treats, I think this company has excellent customer service because they sent me a friendly confirmation letter and shipped quickly. I was a little hesitant about trying Greenie dog treats because of some negative things I have read on the Internet about dogs choking on them and having a hard time digesting them. The company states they have reformulated Greenies in 2006 to solve these problems. I remember a story that really made me sad about a pomeranian in the prime of his life that got a greenie dog treat piece stuck in his throat, and passed away before he could be saved. I cannot get that story out of my mind, it is too horrible. Anyway, I got my Greenies and was surprised that they look just like regular dog biscuits. I opened the package, placed one in my mouth, didn't like it and immediately spit it out. They are still sitting in the middle of the livingroom floor, even the cats don't want to touch them.

The Flint River Ranch dog food was a pleasant surprise. Just because a dog food is labelled "premium" or claims to have all natural ingredients, is no guarantee that I will want to eat it. I can honestly say, Flint River Ranch dog food is quite delicious. I like it more than my two usual favorites, Solid Gold and Castor & Pollux. My dog food sample came in a zip lock bag and looks sort of like crunched up cookies. Each dog food kibble is irregularly shaped, funny looking, but very tasty. The reason I requested this Flint River Ranch dog food, was just to get a free sample. I wasn't planning on ordering any, but now I am seriously considering it. You can get a 10 lb. bag for $19.99 and this price includes the cost of shipping by UPS. I guess that is a little pricey, but a 10 lb. bag of dry dog food would last me at least a month, because I supplement dry dog food with home cooked meals.

Pine Bluff Kennels Raided for Animal Cruelty

Pine Bluff Kennels, a puppy mill selling puppies over the Internet, was raided yesterday by authorities. Pine Bluff Kennels is located in Tennessee on Ed Lyell Road in Hickman County. Over 700 dogs have been confiscated and the Humane Society of the United States has agreed to take them in. Many of these dogs have skin injuries, eye injuries, and broken bones. It seems most of the dogs were never let out of the cages, and the cages all had a large buildup layer of feces. The conditions at Pine Bluff Kennels were very poor, many of the dogs did not even have access to water.

Many people that purchase dogs over the Internet have good intentions, but are inadvertently supporting operations like Pine Bluff Kennels. It is estimated there may be up to 100,000 puppy mills in the US, many of them operate by selling the puppies over the Internet. The conditions at Pine Bluff Kennels is typical of a puppy mill. They do not want you to see the cruel way in which the dogs live, so they hide behind an Internet website, and agree to fly the puppies all over the United States.

Charges are waiting to be filed against Pine Bluff Kennels until they evaluate each dog thoroughly, and get them the medical assistance and care they need. Most likely Pine Bluff Kennels will face numerous charges of animal cruelty. One of the most powerful things you can do to help shut down puppy mills forever, is to refuse to buy a puppy on the Internet.

Find Out What Breed Of Dog You Are!

O.K., So I'm just surfing the Internet in a semi-comatose state that I often do when I'm really really bored. I was reading about why certain dogs seem to have certain traits. Like why does a sheep dog seem to have a natural tendency to herd, a pointer point, and why do retrievers always want to go retrieve?

Mars Veterinary is a dog genetic and DNA bank which has made some remarkable studies in dog DNA. They have done an immense amount of research, and believe these traits are genetic. Dogs all originated from the wolf, yet have branched out into over 130 distinctly different dog breeds. From this research, comes a most interesting product called the Wisdom Panel™ MX Mixed Breed Analysis. This is a simple blood test that can tell you exactly what breed of dog you are, and in what combination.

I am a 13 lb. pomeranian and I look at some of my 6-8 lb. peers, and always wonder if I am a purebred, now I can find out. Not that it is of earth shaking importance in my situation, it is just amazing to me what science can do. Mars Veterinary is actually selling the Wisdom Panel™ MX Mixed Breed Analysis kit on Amazon for $124.00. You are supposed to purchase the kit from Mars Veterinary, take it to your veterinarian for a blood draw, then your veterinarian will send the blood sample to Mars Veterinary. You will receive a detailed results report in 3-4 weeks that will prove exactly what breed of dog you are, or what combination. Cool, huh?

Is This The World's Ugliest Dog?

Could Gus be the ugliest dog in the world? According to officials at the Sonoma-Marin Fair, he is. Gus, a one eyed, three legged Chinese Crested dog has won the title. What does this mean for Gus? This dog will get $1600 in prize money to help pay treatment cost for skin cancer. Gus had to get his leg amputated due to a cancerous skin tumor, and lost his eye in a fight with a cat. He was an abused dog that was rescued by a kind hearted dog lover, Jeanenne Teed. Gus the ugliest dog in the world has also been invited to appear on CBS This Morning and then Animal Planet in october.

On the inside though, Gus is one of the most beautiful dogs in the world. Here is a dog that suffered an abusive home, lost a leg and an eye, and has cancer. He is still happy, and loving, and just wants to snuggle. We could all learn a lesson on how to handle life, from Gus.

Battle Between The Dog Cloning Profiteers

It is now a battle between the dog cloning profiteers, for who actually has the right to clone dogs. RNL Bio based out of South Korea, has just announced it's dog cloning ability and desire to commercially clone your pet, provided that you have a lot of cash. OK, they didn't say it that way, but that is basically what it amounts to. BioArts International is fuming and refers to RNL Bio as black market cloners. Lately, I have been interested in BioArts International's dog cloning service. If you want to get up to speed on who Bioarts International is, here are some recent posts I have made regarding their service:
Dogs Cloned by BioArts International
Update on BioArts International Dog Cloning
Golden Clone Giveaway ~ Win a Cloned Dog!

At any rate RNL Bio has 4 puppy clones, and they are selling 2 of them to anyone at a half a million dollars each. They are clones of a dog named Marine, that has been trained to sniff out cancer. The other 2 puppies will be kept and trained to sniff out human cancer cells. I think it is remarkable that a dog can sniff out cancer, but gee aren't there more accurate medical tests out there? What happens if you get a positive sniff, don't you just end up taking all the medical tests anyway? This isn't RNL Bio's first dog cloning success. They actually cloned the first dog ever, an Afghan hound back in 2005. RNL Bio is also cloning a pit bull named "booger" from California for the low low price of $150,000. That is probably about $100,000 less than BioArts International.

I wish all this money could be used to help feed and shelter all the poor homeless dogs that are in such desperate need of a home. Instead of cloning your dog, why not adopt a puppy or dog that would be put down? In memory of your dog, save an unwanted shelter dog from death. That would be an extreme act of kindness, and a greater tribute to your dog that has passed away, I think.

Treating Arthritis in Dogs with Stem Cells

Many older dogs suffer from arthritis, just like humans do. Severe arthritis can be devastating to live with, and can stop us from enjoying the basics of every day living. An amazing new stem cell treatment for dogs with arthritis has now become an option, and it is looking very promising.

An interesting part of the procedure is that the stem cells actually come from the dog that is suffering from arthritis. How this works is that the dog initially has surgery in which the veterinarian removes 50 grams of fat from the dogs abdomen. The fat specimen is then sent to a company called Vet-Stem located in California. Vet-Stem will then turn this into a stem cell rich liquid that will be injected into the dogs arthritic joints. On the downside, this procedure cannot be performed on dogs that are a poor risk for anesthesia, due to the surgery necessary to acquire the stem cell injection. The procedure also has a $2,500 pricetag, and many are willing to pay that price, so far this procedure has been performed on 700 dogs suffering from arthritis in the United States.

This is still a new technology, so research is ongoing, and they do not seem to have a clear explanation as to why stem cells seem to help arthritic dogs. An interesting aspect is that veterinarians suggest the x-rays look very similar to a treated versus untreated dog. The behavior of the treated dog, is how they are judging success. Arthritic dogs who have not attempted to jump on the couch for years, are now jumping up with ease. Dogs that were in a great deal of pain when their joints were manipulated, no longer seem to be in such pain. Researchers believe the stem cell treatment is signalling other cells to come in reducing pain and inflammation, and building new tissue.

Golden Clone Giveaway ~ Win a Cloned Dog!

Heh. I thought I was done blogging about BioArts International. Not quite. They are promoting a hideous new contest called the Golden Clone Giveaway. Win the chance to have your dog cloned! I guess I shouldn't call their contest hideous, that's not very nice of me. Let me rephrase that to, in my opinion it is sad and twisted. According to their website, they have been receiving emails from people that can't afford dog clones, but are grief stricken because their dog may pass away soon. This is why they decided to initiate the Golden Clone Giveaway in which they will clone some poor persons dog for free. Oh praise be, what a saintly bunch down at BioArts International, and test tubes are so costly nowadays.

Somehow these grieving pet owners believe that a clone of their dog, will be their dog. Am I the only one that gets it? A clone of your dog is not your dog. No one wants to experience the horrible grief that is all consuming when someone you love dearly dies. I hate death with a passion. Yet if we close our eyes and pretend it is not true, will that make it as though it never happened? Just replace our wonderful and unique loved ones with clones, and pretend as though they never died? No matter how much pain we feel over the loss of a loved one, truth still matters. These dog owners are contacting BioArts International for dog cloning because they cannot handle the truth, truth hurts a lot sometimes.

Back to the Golden Clone Giveaway, BioArts International has decided to give away "one dog cloning slot to the family with the most clone worthy dog in the world". The Golden Clone Giveaway began May 30 and will end June 24th. I'm not entering, but if your interested the link to enter is at: www.bestfriendsagain.com/goldenclonegiveaway/

Update on BioArts International Dog Cloning

On June 5th, CoCo the Blogging dog reported "Dogs Cloned by BioArts International", and I wanted to give you an update on that. At the time I knew BioArts International was planning some auctions to commercially sell their dog cloning service, but I didn't know exactly when that would be. BioArts International will have a total of 5 auctions, with the first dog cloning auction to begin on July the 5th 2008 at 11:00am.

The auctions on proxibid.com will only run for a 12 hour duration, and you are required to pre-register with proxibid. You need to fax a statement from your bank stating that you have $250,000 available! To be eligible for the dog cloning auctions you must also be at least 21 yrs. of age. In addition, you must have a living dog that your veterinarian can obtain a tissue sample from, or have gene banked your deceased dogs DNA.

You will recieve an exact clone of your dog in 3 months to a year. BioArts International's cloning lab located in South Korea will monitor your dog for the first 10 weeks to ensure it has no cloning defects. Geez, don't they eat dogs in korea? Anyway, they guarantee your dog clone will not have any cloning defects within the first year, or they will replace your dog free of charge. I wonder if they make you return the "defective" dog? This sounds like a sick joke, but it's not. Read more at www.bestfriendsagain.com, this is very real.

I don't want to impede science, or the advancement of the world, but this just doesn't sit right with me. I am CoCo, unique in all the world, no dog clone could ever replace me. I am not a commodity or a thing to be bought and sold, I am special. When I am gone, I am gone, and dog cloning cannot change that cruel reality. This reminds me of a story. I wrote about my first day here, with my mommy, and how I was actually a gift because her dog had passed away. I am not a replacement, nor do I want to be. I am a one of a kind dog, and can never ever be replaced.

Free Greenies Dog Treats

I found that you can get free Greenies dog treats by requesting them here. Greenies dog treats are extremely popular, and many dogs love them. Personally, I haven't tried Greenies, although I have tried similar brands like Freshies. I want to report, that as I learn more about Greenies dog treats, I have some serious reservations. I signed up for my free samples, then left the Greenies dog treat website to see if I could get more information for this post. What I found is that there were actually several lawsuits against Greenies dog treats, and several dogs have actually died from choking on these. First of all, there is a problem with dogs choking on them. Secondly, it has been reported that they are not very digestible. This was before 2006, now they have reformulated Greenies dog treats to give them a chewy softer texture to lessen the risk of choking. Greenies dog treat have also altered the ingredients to make them more digestible. Since they changed the formulation, there have been no reports of dogs choking on Greenies that I could find. I don't know, but I don't think that I can recommend these, not sure what I'm going to do with my free sample now.

Dogs and July the 4th Fireworks

July the 4th is coming up, and we all know what that means, fireworks! The sounds of explosions going of, the smell of gunfire, and light spreading across the sky. Speaking as a dog, July the 4th has to be the worst holiday ever created by man. Dogs have sensitive hearing, and fireworks hurt our ears. To see lights across the sky is startling, and the smell of gun powder is scary. We don't like it. That's why I thought I would write some tips for dogs regarding July the 4th.

Dogs do not want to go to your outdoor July the 4th celebration. It hurts our ears, we don't like it, so just don't do it. We are patriotic and everything, but would rather celebrate in our own way. If left outside on July the 4th, we may get so frightened that we will run away from home. Remember to leave us inside, preferably with the radio on to drown out some of the noise. 99.99% of the dogs surveyed would prefer that you stay at home with them on July the 4th. It wouldn't be so bad, would it? We can make some popcorn and watch fireworks on TV (at a low volume of course).

You can also train your dog to be comfortable with July the 4th, sort of a doggie fireworks boot camp. I think this is a little over the top, but yes it can be done. This training takes months, so it is too late for this July the 4th. Make a recording of fireworks and play it every day getting a little louder and louder each day. Pop paper bags. Expose your dog to the smell of gunpowder, only with complete supervision of your dog, of course. While this is going on, your dog needs to associate noise with positive experiences. Therefore, while you are exposing your dog to noise, give them treats and play with them.

Plan ahead and make this a happy July the 4th for all!

Operation Baghdad Pups

Operation Baghdad Pups started about a year ago, since then over 100 soldiers have emailed them for help in adopting dogs in Iraq and Afghanistan. Terri Crisp is the project director, and helps to arrange to transport stray dogs from Iraq back to the United States. Leitheiser, a 20 year old female soldier and animal lover, is one of the soldiers that requested help with a black and white dog named, Iraqi. Iraqi was just sent back to the U.S. along with 24 other stray dogs which will enjoy lifelong homes where they will be showered with love.

Leitheiser will finish her duty in Iraq and will be home with Iraqi, sometimes this summer. For Leitheiser, her dog Iraqi lessened the stress of being in Iraq and gave her a little piece of home. For many of our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, every day brings new stress. You will never know how much I appreciate organizations like Operation Baghdad Pups that help to lessen that stress. In addition to Operation Baghdad Pups, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has played a large part in this project, and New Jersey State Assemblyman Neil Cohen as well. Thank You!

CoCoa Mulch Can Kill Dogs

Cocoa mulch is made from the shells of cocoa beans. Some gardeners prefer cocoa mulch because it retains moisture, gives nutrients to your lawn, and smells better than regular mulch. This type of mulch is currently being sold nationwide at home and garden stores, without a warning label for dog owners. Yet, cocoa contains high amounts of theobromine, and can kill your dog.

Many dogs are attracted to cocoa mulch, not only as a cool place to lay down, but they like the taste and smell of it. Simply being around it or laying down in it will not cause problems, but once they start chewing on it, it is a different story. A 50 lb. dog will get pretty sick if he eats 2 oz. of cocoa mulch. That same dog will go into seizures after consuming 5 oz., at 9 oz. it will cause death.

Warning: If you have dogs around the house, do not use cocoa mulch. Dogs have been known to gorge themselves on it, with disastrous results.

Dogs Cloned by BioArts International

If you would like a clone of your dog, this is not a problem for BioArts International. BioArts International is the only company licensed to utilize the somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) cloning patents that created Dolly the sheep, in 1996. The founder of the University of Phoenix, John Sperling, paid them 3.7 million dollars to clone his own dog who passed away in 2002. BioArts International made three dog clones, all who look exactly alike, and who all share a passion for steam broccoli just like the original.

BioArts International is arranging an auction at this time, where 5 winning bidders will get to have their favorite dog cloned. It doesn't come cheap, starting prices for auction will range between $100,000 to $180,000. They have successfully cloned 26 dogs within the last 3 years. We have arrived at a time in history where the success of cloning has become reliable. BioArts International has the formula, they could actually begin cloning humans, I suppose they don't because of possible public outrage. For now, we will just try to get used to the thought of cloned dogs.

The Origin of Pets

A newly discovered chapter in the Book of Genesis has provided the answer to "Where do pets come from?"

Adam and Eve said, "Lord, when we were in the garden, you walked with us every day. Now we do not see you any more. We are lonesome here, and it is difficult for us to remember how much you love us."

And G-d said, "No problem! I will create a companion for you that will be with you forever and who will be a reflection of my love for you, so that you will love me even when you cannot see me. Regardless of how selfish or childish or unlovable you may be, this new companion will accept you as you are and will love you as I do, in spite of yourselves."

And G-d created a new animal to be a companion for Adam and Eve. And it was a good animal. And G-d was pleased. And the new animal was pleased to be with Adam and Eve and he wagged his tail. And Adam said, "Lord, I have already named all the animals in the Kingdom and I cannot think of a name for this new animal."

And G-d said, "No problem. Because I have created this new animal to be a reflection of my love for you, his name will be a reflection of my own name, and you will call him DOG." And Dog lived with Adam and Eve and was a companion to them and loved them.

And they were comforted. And G-d was pleased. And Dog was content and wagged his tail.

After a while, it came to pass that an angel came to the Lord and said, "Lord, Adam and Eve have become filled with pride. They strut and preen like peacocks and they believe they are worthy of adoration. Dog has indeed taught them that they are loved, but perhaps too well."

And G-d said, "No problem! I will create for them a companion who will be with them forever and who will see them as they are. The companion will remind them of their limitations, so they will know that they are not always worthy of adoration."

And G-d created CAT to be a companion to Adam and Eve. And Cat would not obey them. And when Adam and Eve gazed into Cat's eyes, they were reminded that they were not the supreme beings.

And Adam and Eve learned humility. And they were greatly improved. And G-d was pleased. And Dog was happy. And Cat didn't really care one way or the other.
