Dog Powered Machines

I've been reading lately about a company that sells kits to make dog powered skateboards, trikes, scooters, and bicycles. At first glance, it seems like a fun sport to teach your dog. Being the worrier that I am though, I can't help but look at this contraption, and think what would happen if it fell over. DogPoweredScooter

While the contraption is interesting, I've concluded that I prefer dog sports that don't involve being strapped onto a piece of metal, and running at full speed. While researching the dog powered scooters, I've discovered some other dog powered machines from the past.

The Feldt Dog Engine: 1888. This machine was patented by Heinrich Feldt of Hamburg in 1888, this is a real invention in which they used dogs to power industrial sewing machines.

Dog powered treadmills were invented around 1875 and used on small farms to power attached fanny mills or butter churners.

Ban On Dog Fur, Will Russia Join Us?

January 1, 2009 is a special day, not only because it's New Years Day, but it marks the beginning of the ban of all dog and cat fur in Europe. Millions of dogs and cats have been routinely killed in China every year, many skinned alive and forced to suffer through nightmarish conditions, to make fur coats. The EU-wide ban follows similar legislation in America and Australia, but China still has a strong market in Russia. While the european ban on dog and cat fur is a tremendous achievement, I wish that Russia would consider joining us, and refuse to support this type of cruelty.

Vladimir Putin the Prime Minister of Russia, is known for his close relationship with his black labrador Koni. She has been known to sit on Putin's lap during meetings, attend various functions, and even wears a satellite navigation device so that Putin can keep track of her whereabouts at all times. "As far as bad moods go, of course I have them like any other person, but in those cases I try to consult with my dog Koni, she gives me good advice," he told 1,200 reporters gathered for his annual press conference in Moscow. I believe Putin is compassionate in regards to animal suffering, but has most likely overlooked this issue due to many other items on the agenda.

We can write to President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and politely ask that they ban the sale of dog and cat fur in Russia: Send A Letter To The Kremlin

Daffy's Pet Soup Kitchen

Due to a few prior posts regarding pet food banks, I was fortunate to be contacted by Daffy's Pet Soup Kitchen. I absolutely love the work they do, and you'll probably be hearing more about them in the months to come. In the email they wrote,
We have a pet food bank in Georgia in the Lawrenceville area. We serve people from about 20 counties and hand out about 10000 - 12000 pounds of food per month. We deal mainly with pet owners. We want to keep pets at home and not in the pound or rescues. I talked to the pet food bank in California as well. Very helpful. If you need help in your area, I don't know where that is, but I would be more than happy to help. We are opening numerous food banks in different areas this upcoming year. Our group is Daffy's Pet Soup Kitchen. Please visit our site at Daffy's Pet Soup Kitchen. Contact me if you have any questions.
As stated prior, the main focus of Daffy's Pet Soup Kitchen is to provide food and assistance to pet owners, enabling them to keep their pets, rather than surrendering them to the shelter. Yet, Daffy's Pet Soup Kitchen with the SOS Club is doing SO much more than just providing food to those in need. Some other programs they are involved in are organizing the building of dog kennels in domestic violence shelters, saving feral cats with a trap, neuter, and release program and raising money to provide all fire trucks with pet oxygen masks, so that firemen will be better equipped to help animals as well.

Daffy's Pet Soup Kitchen is really making a positive difference, and it really touched my heart to see how much good they are doing. Daffy's Pet Soup Kitchen says,
"Sometimes a pet is the only companion these people may have. When all else may seem lost, your pet, your friend, your family will always love you and not forget you. We are here to try to keep these families together. So many feel the need to give up their pets because they can't take care of them. Some seniors, or people on fixed incomes, cannot take care of their pets and pay for prescriptions or food for themselves. Some people go without things for themselves to take care of their pets. We want to be there for them so they won't have to be in that situation. We want to help. We will coordinate with local co-ops, pet shelters, vet clinics, and the Humane Society and try to fill a need that has been long overdue."

How to make a dog house

I've been interested in making a dog house lately, and am surprised by all the free dog house plans that are available. If you're handy with tools, this would be a fun hobby. You can make a dog house for your own dog, sell dog houses as a part time business, or even donate dog houses to outdoor dogs that otherwise might be left out in the cold. Whether you are a beginner, or an experienced carpenter, you can probably find a plan that will be perfect for your level of skill. I'm actually a beginner, therefore I'm not even going to attempt to go step by step in how to build a dog house on my blog. Instead, I'm listing links of different places that you can find complete and free plans to make your dog house.

Insulated Dog House - This is an amazing dog house that would help to keep your dog warm outside this winter. In extreme cold though, dogs should be kept indoors. This dog house plan has very clear detailed directions, but it's probably not for the beginner.

Basic Dog House - This is a basic dog house with a few extras, like a front porch and removable roof. It is great for a beginner as the entire project requires only one sheet of plywood, two 2"x4"s and one 2"x2".

Insulated Dog House - This is another insulated dog house plan, and the plan designer says it's inexpensive and made out of recycled building materials. This dog house looks REALLY nice, but it would probably be difficult for a beginner. Although this website lists a variety of other free dog house plans as well. In addition, you can find an even wider variety of free dog house plans on Free Woodworking Plans.

On a side note, here is an organization called Habitat For Hounds dedicated to bringing kids together to build dog houses for dogs in need.

Barack Obama With Puppy Mill Dog

" I think how we treat our animals reflects how we treat each other, and it's very important that we have a president who is mindful of the cruelty that is perpetrated on animals." ~Sen. Barack Obama~

This is old news, but Barack Obama posed for this picture in February 08, to help support the campaign to stop puppy mills. While I may not partake in the Obama mania on many levels, I do have complete respect for Obama for caring enough to be concerned about dogs in puppy mills. The dog he is holding is baby, who at 9 years of age was finally rescued from a puppy mill. She spent her whole life in a small metal wire cage having litter after litter, and was about to be killed because she was getting too old and tired to have puppies any longer. Baby's vocal cords had been cut because the puppy mill owners did not want to hear her cry to be let out of her cage, and her leg was amputated because she had injured it, and was not able to recover due to malnutrition.

On the other hand, Biden has received much criticism for buying a German Shepherd pup from a breeder. In my opinion, with so many dogs suffering and being put to death in our shelters, it would be kinder to rescue a dog. Biden purchased a puppy from Jolindy's German Shepherds, to the outrage of many animal welfare activists. While Jolindy's has up to 250 dogs at a time, I still wouldn't necessarily consider them as a puppy mill. However, their record is not clean.

The AKC's Management Disciplinary Committee has suspended Ms. Linda Brown, Spring City, PA, from all AKC privileges for one year, effective April 10, 2006, and imposed a $1000 fine for having submitted or caused to be submitted three litter registration applications that she knew, should have known, or had a duty to know contained false certifications as to the sire and/or dam (DNA exclusion). source
In regards to a recent inspection of her facility,
Dog wardens also found a strong ammonia smell inside the house where a number of dogs are housed, and broken wires and piping in several outdoor kennel areas. As a result they issued warnings for maintenance and sanitation and will conduct a follow up inspection in the near future, the report said. source
Newly elected Vice President Joe Biden has just announced he is planning on getting a second dog, and this time he will adopt a homeless shelter dog, most likely a golden retriever.

Peace on Earth, Good-will to Dogs

Gutenberg is an online library, that takes very old books and prints them online for everyone to read. Tonight I found an interesting book written in 1920, by Eleanor Hallowell Abbott. It is called, "Peace on Earth, Good-will to Dogs", and thought it would be appropriate to list on Christmas day. It is actually quite long, so I'm just listing the beginning, and you can click on the link at the bottom if you would like to read the full story.

PEACE ON EARTH GOOD WILL TO DOGS

PART I

If you don't like Christmas stories, don't read this one!

And if you don't like dogs I don't know just what to advise you to do!

For I warn you perfectly frankly that I am distinctly pro-dog and distinctly pro-Christmas, and would like to bring to this little story whatever whiff of fir-balsam I can cajole from the make-believe forest in my typewriter, and every glitter of tinsel, smudge of toy candle, crackle of wrapping paper, that my particular brand of brain and ink can conjure up on a single keyboard! And very large-sized dogs shall romp through every page! And the mercury shiver perpetually in the vicinity of zero! And every foot of earth be crusty-brown and bare with no white snow at all till the very last moment when you'd just about given up hope! And all the heart of the story is very,--oh_very_ young!

For purposes of propriety and general historical authenticity there are of course parents in the story. And one or two other oldish persons. But they all go away just as early in the narrative as I can manage it.--Are obliged to go away!

Yet lest you find in this general combination of circumstances some sinister threat of audacity, let me conventionalize the story at once by opening it at that most conventional of all conventional Christmas-story hours,--the Twilight of Christmas Eve.

Nuff said?--Christmas Eve, you remember? Twilight? Awfully cold weather? And somebody very young?

Now for the story itself!

FDA Warns Misleading Claims On Drontal Tablets For Tapeworm

Bayer Corporation is the maker of Drontal tablets, that treats tapeworm in dogs and cats. The FDA sent Bayer a stern warning regarding misleading claims on the product, and that if they failed to change all marketing materials within 15 days, they could be subject to seizure and/or injunction. Typically, I'll never side with the big pharma company, but in this case it made me think, does the FDA have too much power? I'll let you be the judge.

Excerpt from letter from FDA:
Unsubstantiated Claim of Effectiveness
The master detailer submitted in the DER states, "Over 13% of the United States population is infected with Toxocara, a parasite of dogs and cats that can be passed from animals to humans" and that, "A deworming program with Drontal® Plus Tablets or Drontal® Plus Taste Tabs® can help reduce the risk of parasitic zoonosis to your clients and staff." These statements suggest that Drontal® Plus Tablets and Drontal® Plus Taste Tabs® are effective for reducing the risk of parasitic zoonosis in humans when the products are not approved for this use. This suggestion has not been approved or permitted for use in the labeling of Drontal® Plus Tablets or Drontal® Plus Taste Tabs®. In addition, CVM is not aware of substantial evidence or substantial clinical experience to support the effectiveness of Drontal® Plus Tablets or Drontal® Plus Taste Tabs® for the prevention of toxocariasis or any other zoonotic disease in humans. The master detailer thus contains suggestions, not approved or permitted for use in the labeling, that Drontal® Plus Tablets and Drontal® Plus Taste Tabs® are more effective than has been demonstrated by substantial evidence or substantial clinical experience. Suggestions that the use of Drontal® Plus Tablets or Drontal® Plus Taste Tabs® in dogs reduces the risk of toxocariasis or any other zoonotic disease in humans is particularly troublesome because early diagnosis and treatment in humans may be delayed.
Entire Warning Letter To Bayer From FDA

Bayer did get rid of labelling or ads with any offending statements, they had to, as the FDA has the power to shut them down. Yet, people can get tapeworm, for Bayer to suggest that keeping your dog worm free can reduce their risk of getting tapeworm as well, seems like common sense to me. Am I missing something?

Pinups For Pit bulls

Little Darling and her Pit Bull Carla Lou, began Pinups For Pit Bulls to help rescue Pit Bulls and provide PR support for the breed as well. Pinups For Pit Bulls goal is to reestablish the defamed reputation of the Pit Bull as American's premier companion animal, war hero, and therapy dog. They run many fund raisers to help Pit Bulls, including the sale of Pinup calendars on the website. These pinup photos are fun America nostalgia, reminiscent of old photos from the 1940's and 1950's. Little Darling has worked many years in the entertainment business, and combined that with her love for animals, creating Pinups For Pit Bulls. This is a video of an interview with Little Darling with Greg Coy:

Dogs And Cold Weather

It's getting cold, in this type of weather it's in your dogs best interest to keep him warm inside the house. Did you read about the dog that was frozen to the sidewalk?

The Sheboygan County Humane Society says the "morbidly obese" dog, an aging border collie mix named Jiffy, froze to the sidewalk when he was left out overnight Wednesday. Shelter manager Carey Payne says few dogs could survive the single-digit temperatures, and it was probably the fat that made the difference.

Jiffy's 59-year-old owner was arrested Thursday morning on suspicion of animal neglect, Sheboygan Police Lt. Tim Eirich said. She told police she tried to get the dog inside but couldn't, and instead checked on him every few hours.
source

IMO, with that type of weather a dog needs to be inside, period. Just because they have a fur coat, it doesn't mean that they can't get cold. Dogs can also suffer from frostbite on their feet, tail, and ears. For less severe cold weather, a well-insulated and elevated dog house may be enough to stay warm. It should be large enough for your dog to turn around and lie down comfortably, and have a burlap cover on the doorway to protect your dog from the wind.

There are also heated dog mats that are made specifically for outdoor doghouses. This is one designed for use in a kennel, doghouse, garage, basement or anywhere extra warmth is desired. This heated dog mat also has a chew resistant cord!
Lectro-Kennel Warming Pad, 22 1/2" x 28 1/2" (80 watts)

If at all possible though, it's really best to keep your dog inside where it is safe and warm.

Is Aggression In Dogs Genetic?

Scientist believe that genetics is an important factor in whether your dog will have a tendency to be aggressive. Cornell University veterinarian and animal behaviorist Katherine Houpt claims that about 27 percent of Springer Spaniels bite people (either strangers or their owners). In an attempt to discover why, she has collected DNA samples from both aggressive and non-aggressive Springer Spaniel dogs. What they found is that aggressive dogs seem to have much lower levels of the neurotransmitters, serotonin and dopamine. Interestingly, low serotonin levels in humans are linked to an increased chance of suicide.

Joanne van der Borg is in charge of a Dutch research program that is designed to breed aggressiveness out of rottweilers. In Holland, a new program was implemented due to rottweiler attacks on people. For the past eight years, Rottweilers must pass a docility test in order to receive a pedigree certificate. If they fail, the owner is requested to not allow them to breed. According to Joanne van der Borg, "The dogs born into this program are much better behaved. There is a strong genetic element to aggression and it is possible that this is being bred out." Genetics do seem to play a factor in dog aggression, as this program appears to be working.

The Horrors Of Hookworm!

Ha Ha, with that kind of sensationalist headline, I was hoping to get you to read this. But really, the true facts about hookworms are enough to gross anyone out. A few things to consider...

* Hookworms are sort of like vampires, only they live inside their host, sucking blood to live. They are especially dangerous in puppies, and have killed puppies by draining their blood supply.

* Hookworms can infect human beings. Although, there are certain species of hookworms that are attracted to dogs, and other species of hookworms that will infect human beings. It is rare for a human being to become infected with a species of hookworm that is normally found in dogs, but it is possible. When a human being gets hookworm it's not from direct contact with a dog, it's typically by walking barefoot or laying with skin exposed in contaminated soil. Therefore, having a dog wouldn't necessarily put you at a higher risk for getting hookworm, but walking around barefoot might.

* The hookworm normally migrates to the lungs, gets coughed up and swallowed, then makes a home in the small intestine and latches onto the intestinal wall with it's six teeth. Hookworms will live, mate, and lay eggs in the intestine and grow to about 1/2 in length.

Hookworms can be passed on to unborn puppies, puppies that are nursing, and by walking in contaminated soil. Some common signs are anemia, bloody diarrhea, and lethargy. Fortunately, they are fairly easy to diagnose and treat, if you catch them early. A diagnosis can be made with a fecal sample and treatment with dewormer medication.

Counterfeit Flea and Tick Products

A few years back, it was discovered that many retailers were selling counterfeit Frontline and Advantage. The packaging was created overseas to look just like Frontline and Advantage. In some cases the counterfeit versions did have pesticide but would have it in wrong dosage, or they would have pesticide intended for a dog in cat packaging. In some cases, it wasn't pesticide at all. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the counterfeit versions were found with online pet retailers and local pet stores, but no veterinarians were selling counterfeits. If you do not buy Frontline or Advantage from a veterinarian, make sure it's not counterfeit before you use it, if it is you can get your money back.

The EPA has instructions on how to tell if you have a counterfeit version of Frontline or Advantage.
Frontline products

The lot number on the retail carton matches the lot number on the applicator package and/or the individual applicators.

The instruction leaflet is included. It provides the following information: first-aid statements, including emergency U.S. telephone numbers; precautionary statements for humans and pets; directions for use; and storage and disposal statements.

The pesticide is contained in an applicator package, which is child-resistant. The directions for opening the child- resistant applicator package include an illustration that actually looks like the applicator package. The directions include "To remove applicator, use scissors or lift and remove plastic tab to expose foil, then pull down."

The legitimate applicator package looks like this; note the notch between the individual applicator packages, which generally are absent on counterfeit products. Text on the package is in English only.

Frontline Applicator Packages
Once you open the applicator package, each individual applicator has a label that includes the registrant's name "Merial;" the product name; the EPA registration number (see list above); the net contents in fluid ounces (fl. oz.) (not in metric measure, i.e., ml); percentage (%) of active ingredient(s) (fipronil for Frontline Top Spot products; and fipronil and (S)-methoprene for Frontline Plus products); and the statements "CAUTION," "Keep out of reach of children," and "See full label for additional directions." Text is in English only.

The applicator label for the dog products includes the size of the dog in pounds on which the product is to be used.
Advantage products

The only way to determine a legitimate Advantage product from a counterfeit product is by examining the actual applicator tubes that are inside the carton. Since the directions for use on the retail carton (outer box) and instruction leaflet of the legitimate product and the counterfeit product are identical, check the language that is printed on the applicator tubes. The legitimate Advantage products all contain applicator tubes that are printed in English. The most obvious sign of a counterfeit product is that the applicator tubes are printed in a foreign language (most likely French or German).

The legitimate applicator tubes include the EPA Registration Number, the signal word WARNING, and the child hazard warning (Keep Out of Reach of Children). Counterfeit applicator tubes may lack this information.
Legitimate applicator tubes will also include a reference statement that refers users to the main labeling for directions for use and will include the manufacturing company's name (Bayer). Counterfeit applicator tubes may lack this information.

Legitimate applicator tubes will contain an active ingredient statement that agrees with the active ingredient statement on the retail carton (9.1% imidacloprid). A counterfeit product may have an active ingredient statement that differs (such as 10%).

Ear Infections In Dogs

One of the most common causes of ear infections in dogs, is a situation in which the ear is unable to "breathe". This can be caused by long droopy ears or matted hair, wax, or dirt accumulation in the ear canal. For the majority of dogs, a quick once a week ear cleaning is all that is necessary, to help to avoid ear infections. With an ear cleaner, fill the ear canal, and massage for 20 seconds on each side. Then with a cotton ball, wipe out the ear. It's important to avoid putting a q-tip inside the ear canal, as this can tend to cause ear wax to get packed in.

Certain breed that may require more attention, such as Cocker Spaniels. Cocker Spaniels tend to have more issues because they have those heavy droopy ears, where moisture gets trapped inside, which can promote bacterial growth. Here is a great recipe to make homemade ear cleaner for your Cocker Spaniel. You will need a plastic or glass container that can hold between 10-12 ounces. Measure in 6 ounces of isopropyl alcohol, add 1/2 tablespoon of boric acid powder, and shake until completely dissolved. Next, add 2 ounces of white vinegar, and shake it up some more. Then add one teaspoon of Betadine antiseptic solution, and shake it again. Then clean the ears as described above. Keep in mind that just like commercially prepared ear cleaner, this mixture cannot be ingested orally.

Bloat In Dogs

There has been much speculation regarding bloat in dogs, as there is not one specific thing that will consistently cause it. Bloat will cause your dogs stomach to fill up with air, and possibly twist on itself, creating a life threatening situation. There are hereditary factors at play, since certain breeds seem to be at a higher risk. Larger breeds with a deep narrow chest such as German Shepherds, Great Danes, Irish Setters and Afghan Hounds, are at a much higher risk, but any size of dog can suffer from bloat. Those are risk factors you really can't do anything about, so I thought I would cover the things you can.

It has been determined that eating and drinking patterns are a factor in dog bloat. To decrease the chances of bloat, *Feed smaller meals several times a day, rather than one large meal. *Feed a diet that consists primarily of meat with less carbohydrates. *Do not allow your dog to drink large amounts of water, right after eating a meal consisting of dry food. *If changing your dogs diet, do it gradually over a couple of weeks. *Do not allow your dog to gulp down his food to quickly. *Avoid heavy activity, especially right after meal time. Your dog may do all of these things and never suffer from bloat, but these are some things that seem to contribute to it.

Some other factors that come into play are stress, age, and gender. Male dogs, neutered or not, are twice as likely to get bloat than female dogs. Although any age of dog can get bloat, after 7 yrs of age the risk doubles. Stress, nervousness, and anxiety can also cause bloat in dogs.

Signs Of Bloat: Keep in mind that your dog may not have all of these symptoms, if your dog is in distress the best thing to do is get him to the veterinarian!
1. Unproductive vomiting where nothing comes out, or just small amounts foam and mucous.
2. Difficulty breathing, especially rapid shallow breathing
3. Extended stomach (may feel hard)
4. Abdominal pain may cause your dog to sit/lay down in an unusual position
5. Restlessness and pacing

When a dog is suffering from bloat the stomach fills with air, and can stop digestion and create an accumulation of toxins. In addition as it fills with air, this can cause the stomach to twist, which will cause a blockage of blood supply damaging tissue. There is no home cure for this, and your dog needs to be rushed to emergency immediately. The treatment typically will involve supportive treatment such as IV fluid, performing a procedure to remove the gas from the stomach, and follow up surgery to return the stomach to it's proper position.

Best Friends Dogtown

Georgia is a pit bull that was previously owned by Michael Vick, currently serving 23 months in prison for dog fighting. She had all of her teeth pulled out as a bait dog, had numerous litters of puppies, and many physical and emotional scars as well. At first she didn't trust anyone, and would cower down if anyone went near her. Yet, while Vick is serving his well earned prison time, Georgia has been transforming into quite the social butterfly! She was one of 22 dogs owned by Michael Vick, who are getting a second chance at Dogtown. Georgia has decided she can trust people again, and just loves a good belly rub.

Georgia has been present at DogTown events, and appeared on the cover of The New York Times. You can see Georgia on The Ellen DeGeneres Show scheduled to air monday at 4pm mountain time December 15th. National Geographic Channel's series will air "Saving the Michael Vick Dogs" at 7pm mountain time December 28th as well. Cherry is a male dog rescued from Michael Vick as well, that was completely terrified of people. He would simply freeze in fear, shut down, and refuse to move. DogTown has patiently worked with him and now he loves to play with dogs and people. All of the dogs previously abused by Michael Vick are slowly recovering, and will eventually find loving homes as they recover from their emotional scars.

$5000 Reward Dog Fighting

Last night I posted regarding a suggestion I had found online, about how to avoid detection from animal control officers. The intent of the article seemed to be aimed at those that are breeding dogs in inadequate facilities, but I found someone had posted it who was also recommending a website for dog fighting enthusiasts. I'm thankful that we have rights, and it is a great idea to be aware of them, it just irks me to know that people involved in dog abuse are so fully aware of them. The dogs don't get any rights. They are just considered as a source of cruel entertainment, for those that consider them as nothing more than a piece of property.

In the case of dog fighting, let's punish the guilty, and not the dogs. I don't think we need breed specific legislation, or to ban Pit Bulls. These dogs are loyal and intelligent, and don't deserve any of this. What we do need to do however, is to create harsher penalties for those that are fighting dogs, and go after them aggressively. If you know of someone fighting dogs, did you know that the HSUS will give you a $5000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in dogfighting or cockfighting? You can save an animals life, and get a $5000 reward from the HSUS for your kindness at the same time!

When Animal Control Is Not Your Friend

For those involved in animal cruelty, breeding animals in inadequate facilities, or dog fighting, animal control is not your friend. On a less sinister level, perhaps you just have one more animal than is allowed in your area, or your dog is not registered, and you don't want animal control to find out. I was on a dog forum tonight, when someone posted advice published by an attorney on what to do if animal control shows up at your door. Please keep in mind that this attorney's job is simply to advice people of their rights, and is probably a very nice person. What did concern me though is as I've researched this, I've discovered a different website that is for dog fighting enthusiasts. I believe they are actually using this information to avoid being detected by animal control. There may be a follow up post on this situation, once I've had time to see what can be done. Without further delay, here is the attorney's advice.
WHAT TO DO WHEN ANIMAL CONTROL COMES KNOCKING

by George J. Eigenhauser Jr.

(he is an attorney at law licensed in the State of California since 1979 and practices in the areas of civil litigation and estate planning)

ANTI-DOG ENFORCEMENT - What Every Dog Owner Needs to Know

Dog owners and ethical breeders are increasingly being targeted. Disgruntled neighbors may retaliate against dog owners and may other reasons drive complaints, and anti-dog enforcement action, which many times may be conducted illegally.

The following text outlines methods of inquiry and enforcement which may be used by local officials in attempts to enforce ordinances in your community and suggested techniques of response. These techniques are entirely legal and based upon the rights of citizens as stated by the U.S. Constitution.

No breeder wants to have Animal Control come knocking on the door...but if they do, it will help if you know what your options are.

Remember, Animal Control is law enforcement. They are bound by the same Constitution as any other government agency. To protect yourself, you need to know your rights. These vary slightly one jurisdiction to another, but some general principles apply. One rule applies everywhere: never physically resist an officer.

When Animal Control is At Your Door:

1. Do not let them in, no matter how much they ask. Animal Control generally cannot enter your home without a warrant, or your permission. While regular police can enter in emergency situations when human life is at risk (i.e. they hear gunshots and a scream inside), there are few, if any, situations in which Animal Control can enter your home without a warrant. Simply tell them they may not come in.

2. If you let them in, anything they find in "plain sight" can be used against you. In some circumstances Animal Control officers, unable to find a legitimate reason to make an arrest, have reported building or zoning violations. This may include caging you attached to a wall without a building permit, that extra outlet in the puppy room, having more pets than allowed by zoning, even extension cords in violation of fire codes! No matter how clean your kennel, if they want to find a violation, they will.

3. Do not talk to them from an open doorway. Step outside an close (and lock if possible) the door behind you. This is necessary because:

A) Anything they see through the open door is "plain sight" and may be the basis for an arrest, or probable cause for a search warrant.

B) If they make an arrest or even feel threatened they are usually permitted to search for weapons in your immediate area. Do you keep a baseball bat inside the door for your protection? Even if you don't, once they step inside to look, they are in your home and may continue to search.

C) It is hard not to be intimidated by someone in authority. Some animal control is even done by local police, who carry guns. It is easy for them to get "in your face", causing you to back up into the home. Once you go in, it will be interpreted as an invitation to follow.

4. If they claim to have a warrant, demand to see it. In general, a search warrant must be signed by a judge. A warrant to search your home for dogs does not include an inventory of your jewelry box. A warrant to search your kennel in the garage or in the barn does not include a search of your home.

5. In some locations dog owners may have obtained special "breeder permits" that stipulate that Animal Control has your permission to enter at any time. If you have signed such a permit they still cannot enter against your wishes, since you can revoke the permission at any time. However, if you refuse permission it may allow them to cancel your breeder permit, so you have to weigh the consequences.

6. Warning - anyone in lawful possession of the premises may be able to give permission for a search. Make sure your roommate, babysitter, dog-sitter, housekeeper and other know that they should not let animal control into your home or on your property (i.e. backyard, garage, etc.).

How to Handle Questions:

1. Don’t answer any questions beyond identifying yourself for the officer. Anything you say to the officer in your defense cannot be used in court (hearsay). Anything you say that is harmful to you will be used in court (confessions are not considered hearsay). You cannot win, except by remaining silent.

2. Be polite but firm. Do not argue, bad-mouth, curse, threaten or try to intimidate the officer.

3. Do not lie to an officer, ever. However, it is NOT a lie to exercise your right to remain silent.

4. Keep your hands in plain sight. People have been shot by police when common objects, such as a wallet, were mistaken for a gun.

5. Do not touch the officer in any way. Do not physically resist an officer, no matter how unlawful his or her actions.

6. Don't try to tell your side of the story, it cannot help.

7. Do not threaten the officer that you plan to file a complaint for their actions.

8. If the questioning persists, demand to speak to a lawyer first. Repeat as necessary.

Gathering the Facts:

1. Get the name and badge number of each officer involved. If he/she does not volunteer this information, ask.

2. Ask the name of the agency they represent. Different agencies have different enforcement responsibilities.

3. Ask why they are there. Request the factual basis of the complaint and the identity of the complainant.

4. If they have other people with them (Humane Society, press, etc.) get the names and organizations for all present.

5. Note the names (and addresses) of any witnesses to the encounter.

6. If you are physically injured by an officer, you should take photographs of the injuries immediately, but do not forego proper medical treatment first.

7. Write down all of the information, as well as the date and time of the incident immediately, while details are fresh in your mind.

8. If you rights are violated, file a complaint with the appropriate body.

If You Are Arrested:

1. Remain silent. Answer no questions until you have consulted with a lawyer.

2. Don't "explain" anything. You will have time for explanations after you have talked to a lawyer.

3. Within a reasonable time they must allow you to make a phone call to get a lawyer or arrange bail. They are not allowed to listen to your phone call to your attorney, but they may "monitor" the rooms for "your protection". Do not say anything you do not want them to overhear; save that until after you are out on bail.

Telephone Inquiries or Threats:

You may receive telephone inquiries concerning the number of dogs you own and whether any dogs or puppies are for sale. Other questions may also be asked.

Your response should be to inquire "Are you interested in a puppy?". If the answer is "yes", ask that person for his/her name, address and phone number. Suggest that you or a responsible breeder will contact that person at a more convenient time for you.

If the answer is friendly and genuinely inquisitive, invite the person to look at your puppies.

If the question asked is "What is the price of each puppy?", simply say that puppies of this type are being sold for between "X" and "Y" dollars. Never say that you are selling them.

If the question asked is "Are these your puppies?", you should ask, "Why do you want to know?".

If you conversation indicates that the person is representing the county clerk's office or allegedly representing an official body, ask the caller for:

-Full name, title and phone number
-Agency's full name and full address
-Their supervisor's full name and phone number
-Nature of the inquiry (what it is about)
-Why the inquiry is being made
-How your name and phone number were obtained
-Ask that all future questions from that agency be submitted in writing

Preventative Measures:

1. Always keep you kennel clean and take good care of your animals.

2. Consider a P.O. Box or other address for business cards and advertisements. Keep descriptions of your location general (i.e. Southern California, rather than the name of the city where you live). The internet can provide anonymity for initial contacts. You can even buy a "remote prefix" to get a number from a nearby community forwarded to your phone or to a voice mail. Avoid local newspaper classifieds, they are often monitored.

3. Screen any potential puppy buyers carefully. Always be alert that they may be Animal Control or even Animal Rights working under cover.

4. Don't allow strangers into your home until you have screened them.

5. Be fair and honest in all of your dealings, and be on good terms with your neighbors. Most animal control contacts are complaint-driven. Some complaints may arise as harassment by people with unrelated grievances against you. It may be a disgruntled dog buyer or a cranky neighbor who doesn't like you parking in front of his house.

6. Anything about you that can be observed in "plain sight" from the street or sidewalk can become probably cause for a warrant. Even areas on your property open to visitors can be dangerous. Be aware of which areas of your home are visible from the outside and plan accordingly.

7. If you are confronted by Animal Control and turn them away, assume they will be back. Use the time available to make sure everything is clean and presentable. If you are over the limit on the number of pets, find friends who can provide temporary shelter for your dogs.

Whatever you do, stay calm and keep your wits about you.

Just say "no", no matter what threats or promises of leniency they make.

When in doubt, say nothing and speak to a lawyer afterwards.

Dog Pregnancy

Dogs will usually go into their first heat at 6-12 months of age, and if unspayed will have an estrus cycle twice a year at which time they may become pregnant. Pregnancy in a dog last only two months, somewhere between 58-68 days. Smaller breeds of dogs tend to have a slightly shorter pregnancy than large breed dogs. About halfway through the pregnancy the expectant mother dog will increase her appetite to eat about twice as much food as normal, and during nursing will eat three times as much. She's not just eating for two as the cliche goes, she may be eating for up to twelve puppies! Pregnant dogs require a high quality puppy chow through pregnancy, and for the entire time while nursing the puppies.

Some signs of pregnancy in dogs besides a voracious appetite, are enlarged nipples and a clear vaginal discharge, after about three weeks into the pregnancy. Veterinarians are able to confirm a pregnancy diagnosis at 25 days with an ultrasound, with a blood test at 30 days, or an x-ray at 45 days. Towards the end of the pregnancy term, it is recommended to keep the new mom away from other dogs, with a comfortable place to give birth to her puppies. Within 24 hours of giving birth, a dogs temperature will fall below 100, as it is normally 101.5 fahrenheit. In the initial stage of labor she will begin to feel contractions, and will show signs of being uncomfortable, this lasts for about up to twelve hours until the first puppy is born. The puppies are usually born about 30-60 minutes apart.

Sarcoptic Mange In Dogs

After writing about demodectic mange, caused by the demodex canis mite, it seems like a good idea to mention sarcoptic mange as well. Sarcoptic mange is caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei mite, and is different than demodectic mange. Sarcoptes scabiei

In demodectic mange it differs in that it's caused by a mite that normally lives on the skin, but starts to take over when your dog has an impaired immune system or is highly stressed. Sarcoptic mange caused by a different type of mite called Sarcoptes scabiei, can easily infect healthy dogs, causes fierce itching, and is contagious. This mite most commonly infects the ears, elbows, legs, and face initially, and if left untreated will spread out to other parts of the body. While it is true that this type of mite can infect humans, it does not live very well on humans, and will die on it's own within a few weeks.

Symptoms of sarcoptic mange in dogs are severe itching, oozing sores, crusty ears and elbows, hair loss, yellow crusts, and small red postules. Sarcoptic mange can sometimes be diagnosed with skin scrapings, or may be diagnosed based on symptoms alone. Topical treatments may include Frontline spray, lime-sulfur dips, or a variety of other parasiticidal treatments. In addition, other drugs like Ivermectin to kill mites, steroids to help stop the itching, and antibiotics to combat secondary infections may be used.

As a side note: I was on a forum where a dog owner stated to a veterinarian that she did not want to use prednisone for itching, because of the possible side effects. The veterinarian commented back that she might try Aveeno oatmeal rinse (normally used for people), as it does a good job in relieving itching in dogs as well.

Demodex Canis

Demodex canis are microscopic mites that normally reside in a dog's hair follicles. If your dogs immune system is compromised, that's when the mites start running the show, causing demodectic mange. In case you're worried, careful studies have shown, that demodex canis mites are not really contagious to humans, as this type of mite thrives from living on dogs. Human beings typically have mites of their own, such as Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis that live in the eyelashes, but you shouldn't get your dogs mites. In fact, when a dog gets demodectic mange, they will not usually be contagious to even other dogs, unless the other dog has a weakened immune system as well. Demodex Canis Mite

Symptoms of demodectic mange may include hair loss, circular bald spots, and red scaly crusty dry skin. It usually begins to develop around the face and paws. If it is a mild case, with just one or two small spots, your veterinarian may only recommend a healthier diet and let the situation resolve itself without treatment. For what is termed "generalized" demodectic mange, where it has spread to larger areas, a topical treatment will be prescribed along with an antibiotic to treat secondary bacterial infection.

The best prevention against demodex canis mites turning into mange, is to stay in good health. This includes good nutrition, proper exercise, and positive interaction.

Ear Cropping, Tail Docking, and The AKC

As you may or may not be aware, the American Veterinary Medical Association has recently made an even stronger statement, condemning the practice or ear cropping and tail docking. In a statement by the AVMA, "The AVMA opposes ear cropping and tail docking of dogs when done solely for cosmetic purposes. The AVMA encourages the elimination of ear cropping and tail docking from breed standards." They would like dog breed organizations, such as the AKC, to remove the requirement for ear cropping and tail docking from their standards.

These practices began in the 1700's because they believed it would help to reduce injury of fighting dogs, increase the dogs speed, strengthen the back, and was even considered a prevention for rabies. The AKC still adamantly supports ear cropping and tail docking, while other dog breed organizations around the world have banned the practice for being inhumane. Ear cropping and tail docking are banned in the United Kingdom, Europe, and Australia. Yet, the AVMA isn't demanding to have the practice made illegal, they do want the AKC to consider dropping the breed standards that would require certain breeds to go through these procedures. The AKC doesn't disqualify a dog from being shown that does not have a docked tail or cropped ears, but they do ensure that they won't win in competition. Here is an example of the AKC standards for Weimaraners in which they state a Weimaraner with an undocked tail will be penalized. Some common dog breeds that undergo ear cropping and tail docking include schnauzers, boxers, cocker spaniels, Great Danes, Dobermans, and miniature pinschers.

I've been trying to understand the AKC position, so I've looked up their mission statement which is, "The American Kennel Club is dedicated to upholding the integrity of its Registry, promoting the sport of purebred dogs and breeding for type and function. Founded in 1884, the AKC® and its affiliated organizations advocate for the purebred dog as a family companion, advance canine health and well-being, work to protect the rights of all dog owners and promote responsible dog ownership." What I do not understand, is how requiring dogs to undergo painful cosmetic surgery to be successful in the show ring, has anything to do with this statement. While I think they are terribly wrong on this issue, I do want to recognize that the AKC is comprised of many people that love dogs, and they have no evil intent. IMO, their beliefs are rooted in heritage and tradition. I'm hoping that ear cropping and tail docking will be a tradition they consider changing. If these procedures are ever required for the health and well-being of a dog, I can understand, but not for cosmetic reasons.

To be fair, here is the statement made by the AKC in response to the AVMA.
AKC Statement on AVMA Crop and Dock Policy

[Wednesday, November 26, 2008]
New York, NY (November 21, 2008) -- The American Kennel Club® was advised this week of the AVMA's newly amended policy on ear cropping and tail docking following its adoption by the AVMA Executive Board at the recommendation of their Committee on Animal Welfare on November 15, 2008.

Historically, the AKC has worked closely with the AVMA to ensure that the rights of individual dog owners, and breed standards, remain protected. However, the AKC was very disappointed to not have been consulted regarding this latest iteration of the policy, despite having been in frequent contact with the AVMA in recent months.

At a joint meeting this Wednesday AKC explained to the AVMA that we recognize ear cropping and tail docking, as prescribed in certain breed standards, are acceptable practices integral to defining and preserving breed character, enhancing good health, and preventing injuries. These breed characteristics are procedures performed to insure the safety of dogs that on a daily basis perform heroic roles with Homeland Security, serve in the U.S. Military and at Police Departments protecting tens of thousands of communities throughout our nation as well as competing in the field.

Mislabeling these procedures as "cosmetic" is a severe mischaracterization that connotes a lack of respect and knowledge of history and the function of purebred dogs. Breed standards are established and maintained by AKC Parent Clubs (each of the 158 AKC registered breeds is stewarded by a breed-specific Parent Club) keeping foremost in mind the welfare of the breed and the function it was bred to perform.

As a not for profit organization that has been devoted to the advancement and welfare of dogs for 125 years, the AKC believes that all dog owners bear a special responsibility to their canine companions to provide proper care and humane treatment at all times and that responsible dog owners, in consultation with their veterinarian, have the right to make decisions regarding appropriate care and treatment of their pets.

AKC's policy on the issue, which remains unchanged, states:

The American Kennel Club recognizes that ear cropping, tail docking, and dewclaw removal, as described in certain breed standards, are acceptable practices integral to defining and preserving breed character and/or enhancing good health. Appropriate veterinary care should be provided.

Dog owners who would like to contact AVMA directly regarding their policy should direct comments to Gail Golab, head of the AVMA Animal Welfare Division: ggolab@avma.org or 847-925-8070.

It's funny how they drag Homeland Security in this, as if they have anything to do with it. The AVMA isn't even calling for an out and out ban or to make it illegal. The AVMA is requesting that the AKC "remove the requirement for ear cropping and tail docking from their standards." That's all. This wouldn't undermine preserving breed character, as the supposed breed character requires cosmetic surgery to achieve. Why don't we just let dobermans be au natural with cute floppy ears, is it because they would lose that scary guard dog look? The AKC says ear cropping and tail docking is healthy for dogs, but veterinarians beg to differ.

According to the AVMA, tail docking is painful with a potential for complications such as excessive bleeding, infection, and necrosis. Some studies are also suggesting underdeveloped pelvic musculature and incontinence later in life may possibly result from tail docking. Although, the AKC suggests tail docking should be required because of possible tail injury, AVMA doesn't really agree with that either.
It has been suggested that docking protects the animal from later tail damage, in cases where the breed is more vulnerable or more likely to experience tail injury during its activities (e.g., breeds that hunt in thick cover and have vigorous tail action). Tail injuries generally have a low rate of occurrence and many working breeds' tails go undocked. However, the German Shorthaired Pointer Breed Council collected breeder reports showing a high incidence of tail injury after the 1990 ban on docking in Sweden. It is possible that some breeds and uses are particularly vulnerable to tail trauma, but peer-reviewed data is lacking. source
On the subject of ear cropping, the AVMA states there is the risk of anesthesia, discomfort of bandaged ears for a few days to a few months, infection, and repeated surgery if necessary to acheive desired look. While the AKC maintains ear cropping is for good health, the AVMA states that
It has been suggested that dogs with cropped ears are less likely to suffer from infections of the ear canal. Although the development of some serious infections has been linked to the presence of a heavy hanging ear, there is no evidence that cropping prevents or successfully treats these conditions. It has also been suggested that cropping avoids later ear injury or improves hearing, but no evidence is available to substantiate these claims either. source

Christmas Dog Safety

While Christmas may be a time of joy and celebration, there are dangers to your dog specific to this time of year. With the holiday decorating and festivities just starting, you may want to check this partial list to ensure your home is dog safe.

Houseplants that we tend to keep around at Christmas, such as mistletoe, holly, lilies and poinsettias are all poisonous to dogs, and should be kept out of reach. Food that can be strung into strands for the Christmas tree, such as popcorn and cranberries, can cause blockages resulting in emergency surgery to remove. If you do get a real tree, you must keep your dog from drinking the water it's sitting in, as it could contain toxic chemicals or bacteria. Holiday goodies such as chocolate (theobromine) and candies (xylitol) can be poisonous to your dog.

The cords from Christmas tree lights and decorations can cause shocks, burns or other serious injuries. Whenever possible tape them down, and unplug them whenever your not at home. For safety, you can also anchor the top of the Christmas tree to the ceiling, to make sure it doesn't fall down. Avoid glass ornaments, which break easily and may cut your dogs feet or mouth. If your dogs a chewer, it's better to keep the Christmas tree blocked off altogether, as artificial and real trees have sharp needles that are indigestible. It's better not to use tinsel, as it can obstruct the intestine. Keep lights and ornaments off the lower branches of the Christmas tree. Wire hooks on ornaments, small ornaments, and even shards of glass from broken ornaments could be swallowed.

The Christmas season can also be a stressful time for pets, especially with the increased amount of visitors in the house. To keep your dog feeling secure, make sure to keep him on his normal routine of feeding, walking, and playtime.

The Pet Food Bank

Last month, I wrote about organizing a pet food bank. I've decided to do a follow up on this, as I was contacted by a large pet food bank with additional information on starting a pet food bank. The Pet Food Bank has been helping to feed animals in need for over 10 years in Southern California and Mexico, and said they would be happy to provide suggestions to anyone who is interested in doing the same. They we're kind enough to write a condensed version at my request, on how someone could go about starting a pet food bank. They said,
Sure...I can do that. It is more involved than people suspect. Maybe I should just put it in a recipe form. If they need more info...they can contact me.

In order to start a pet food bank: Decide on who will qualify for food, rescues or individuals. If individuals, require volunteer time in exchange for food. If rescues, ask a donation to cover costs. (gas, insurance, storage, etc.) Obtain non-profit status (501-c3). Once established, contact manufacturers, distributors, and retailers of pet food. Have a truck or van to pick up and deliver. Warehouse storage for the food. Volunteers. Forklift and pallet jack. Tape guns, box openers, trash bags, shelves. About 60 hours per week to operate the food bank.

Hopefully this gives you a little insight to the work involved. In our organization, no one is paid...it is all volunteer. It is a very dirty job, and not very glamorous. If people want to work with animals..this is not for them. It is more like working in a warehouse. But if they can look at the big picture and realize how this helps feed many homeless animals it will fill their soul. Last year we moved over 1,000,000 lbs. of donated food to animal rescues. Lots of tails are wagging because of us. That is reward enough.
Good luck! :-)
Renee
The Pet Food Bank

That's how to start a pet food bank in a big way! If that seems overwhelming, in my case, I just found a local human food bank that was willing to hand out pet food, and held a pet food drive at my job. Whether you decide to do something on a small scale, or start a huge non-profit organization, it's all up to you.
