National Pet Week 2009
If you've been putting off obedience training, National Pet Week would be a great time to start. Put aside 15 minutes a day and play tug of war, toss a ball around, or take the time for a good old fashioned tummy rub. Why not make some homemade dog treats to celebrate National Pet Week?
Buddy Boys Dog Biscuits
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 cup nonfat dry milk powder
1/2 cup oats, rolled (raw) -- quick cooking
1/2 cup yellow cornmeal
1 teaspoon sugar
Cut in 1/3 cup shortening until mix is coarse crumbs. Stir in 1 egg.
Dissolve 1 tablespoon instant chicken or beef bouillon granules in
1/2 cup water. Stir liquid into flour mix with a fork. Form dough into
a ball and knead on floured board for 5 minutes. Divide ball in half
and roll each portion until 1/2 inch thick. Use a cookie cutter or
shape biscuits. Put 6 on a plate and microwave at medium for 5 to
10 minutes or until firm and dry to touch. Turn biscuits over after
1/2 cooking time
Cheese and Bacon Dog Biscuits
3/4 cup Flour
1/2 teaspoon Baking Soda
1/2 teaspoon Salt
2/3 cup Butter
2/3 cup Brown Sugar
1 Egg
1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups oatmeal
1 cup Cheddar Cheese -- shredded
1/2 cup Wheat Germ
1/2 pound Bacon -- or bacon bits
Combine flour, soda and salt; mix well and set aside. Cream butter
and sugar, beat in egg and vanilla. Add flour mix mixing well. Stir in
oats, cheese, wheat germ and bacon. Drop by rounded tablespoon
onto ungreased baking sheets. Bake at 350 for 16 minutes. Cool
and let the critters enjoy!
Here are instructions to make a simple dog toy, that's dog tested and dog approved. What you will need:
* Tube sock
* Newspaper
Crumple up little pieces of newspaper, stuff it in the sock, and tie off the end of the sock. This makes a crumply toy, perfect for dragging around, and even laying on. Have a safe and happy National Pet Week 2009.

The Purina Diet
I was about to check out when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog. What did she think, that I had an elephant?
Since I had little else to do, on impulse, I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, and that I was starting the Purina Diet again, although I probably shouldn't because I ended up in the hospital last time. On the bright side though, I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in the Intensive Care Ward with tubes coming out of every hole in my body and IV's in both arms. I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is to load your pockets with Purina nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry and that the food is nutritionally complete so I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in the line was enthralled with my story by now.)
Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food had poisoned me. I told her no; I had stopped in the middle of the parking lot to lick my butt and a car hit me.
I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack, he was laughing so hard!
The supermarket won't let me shop there anymore.
Pet Pop - Sparkling Soda For Your Dog

A new sparkling soda called Pet Pop, is being marketed internationally from a company called Pets Palace, based out of Australia. Pet Pop comes in either Luscious Lulu, Lemon Lola, Candy Pop, or Betty Blu. While it's an interesting concept, it seems Pets Palace has it all wrong. Those varieties may appeal to humans, but may not be positively received in the canine community. CoCo the Blogging Dog would like to humbly suggest a few additional Pet Pop varieties such as Soupy Liver, 24 hr. Road Kill Blend, Pureed Turkey Ola, Bologna Mush, and Toilet Water Delight. Another thing, the glass bottle packaging has got to go, since it does nothing for dogs. It would be fantastic if the Soupy Liver soda pop could be packaged in some type of contraption that resembles the Kong dog toy. Not sure how this would work, but I'm sure Pets Palace will be happy to get their design engineers right on it! Thanks.

Mutt Muffs - Hearing Protection For Dogs

Mutt Muffs is an interesting new product for dogs that provides hearing protection in noisy environments. The inventor of Mutt Muffs likes to take her black labrador for rides in her Cessna airplane, but was concerned about the decibel level. Due to the lack of adequate hearing protection products for dogs that like to fly, Mutt Muffs was invented out of necessity. While Mutt Muffs was specifically created for canine aviators, this product can protect your dogs hearing on the shooting range, or anywhere there is a lot of noise. Mutt Muffs is a great product, and the owner is volunteering her time and aircraft to help homeless dogs as well! Animal rescue flights can take animals from an overcrowded shelter where euthanasia seems imminent, and quickly transport the rescued dog to a foster home or permanent home in another state. You can read more about Mutt Muffs and the pilot volunteer program at: safeandsoundpets.com and AnimalRescueFlights.org

Just Say No to Escargot!
Your dog can get lungworm indirectly as well. I certainly don't want to gross you out, BUT...Let's say a bird ate an infected snail, your cat ate the bird, and your dog has a habit of rummaging in the cat litter box, well...
While dog lungworm fortunately isn't terribly common, it's important you're aware. As we begin to experience the springtime showers this year, remember to tell your dog to just say no to escargot!

Volunteer For Dogs
"President Obama has been calling on Americans to work together -- street by street, town by town -- to tackle our country's biggest challenges.
Yesterday, that service got a lot easier when President Obama signed the Serve America Act, the largest expansion of national service since the creation of the Peace Corps. Yesterday's signing opens up new service opportunities for millions of people across the country.
Join your fellow Americans in putting our country back on track.
Visit the White House website to find a service opportunity in your community, and tell us how you're delivering on President Obama's call to service.
Vice President Joe Biden, First Lady Michelle Obama, former President Bill Clinton, former First Lady Rosalyn Carter and Senator Ted Kennedy all joined the President at yesterday's signing ceremony.
They all wanted to be among the first to answer the President's call to serve.
Now it's your turn. The Serve America Act triples the size of AmeriCorps over the next eight years, and focuses on our country's toughest challenges -- including clean energy, health care, and education.
It gives students, seniors, and everyone in between the resources to serve. And it strengthens nonprofit organizations to expand opportunities for everyone to pitch in.
You've already taken the first step by signing up at USAservice.org. We're so grateful for the work you've done since the National Day of Service in January.
Take the next step. Join President Obama's official White House initiative to renew America:
http://www.usaservice.org/whitehouse
We hope you'll use this historic legislation to enrich both your own life and the lives of others across this country."
If you visit the link above, you'll notice a link on right hand side to go to Serve.gov. Once there, you can find a volunteer opportunity based on interest. In the search box, I typed in "dogs" and it gave me an animal rescue group right next to my house that needs volunteers to socialize and walk dogs. They were just requesting a commitment of one hour a week. If your interested in volunteering to help animals or human types in your local area, check it out!

Pawsengers will be boarded and de-boarded from planes as quickly as possible, never left in the cold or heat, and depending on transit time, will be offered toilet facilities, food and water as necessary during stops. Pet Parents will be assured of sensitive, careful handling and the peace of mind that their pets are well looked after by people who care as much about their pets as they do.
The Pet Airways goal is to make the pet travel experience more comfortable and enjoyable for both pawsengers and their human families.
Founded in 2005 by Dan Wiesel and Alysa Binder, Pet Airways was created to provide a safe and comfortable solution for the transportation of pets. Inspiration for the concept came from difficulties encountered when shipping Zoe, their Jack Russell Terrier, across the country."

Bo Obama Exclusive Interview
Photo Left: Bo ObamaCoCo: Your registered name is Amigo's New Hope, for the first six months of your life your name was Charlie, and now it's Bo Obama. Doesn't it all get confusing?
Bo Obama: It's OK, I'm already getting used to it. It's not really the name changes that bother me. To be honest, it's all the different places and faces, that have been the most confusing. I was born in Texas, then was sold to a family when I was only two months old. Then the family didn't want me any more because their other dog didn't like me. Then I went and lived with the Kennedy family for a month. After that I was adopted by the Obama's, moved to the White House, and became the First Dog. I just hope they will love me, and let me stay with them for the rest of my life.
CoCo: How does it make you feel when animal groups criticize Obama for not getting a shelter dog?
Bo Obama: It makes me feel bad. I'm a good boy, and I deserve a home just like any other dog. President Obama would have been just as happy to adopt a shelter dog, but fortunately for me, I was able to work my way into his heart. Fate brought us together. Besides, President Bush had his Scotties, and I don't recall PETA hounding him about it.
CoCo: What are your plans as the First Dog?
Bo Obama: As First Dog, my most important responsibility is to provide unconditional love and support to the Presidential family, especially on the hard days. However, if I do get the chance to dig up Michelle's vegetable garden, I'm going for it.

It's Official, First Dog In The White House!
Technically, Bo is not really a rescued dog, but President Obama will make up for that by making a donation to the Washington, D.C. Humane Society. It sounds like Bo has been a top secret project, as the Obama's have been rather hush hush, yet actually met Bo several weeks ago. Bo has been training for his first dog responsibilities with the Kennedys' dog trainers, and now is ready to settle into the White House to keep Sasha and Malia company. I hope we'll get to see regular updates about Bo on the White House website.

Home Cooked Dog Food and Treat Recipes
Liver Treats
1 pound beef liver
All you need are beef livers. Try your local meat packers; they often throw them away. Or you can buy fresh liver from the supermarket. Cut the liver into approximately 1 inch slices. Place in your food dehydrator for 24 hours*. Use Pam or the equivalent on the drying racks, so the liver won't stick. Let dry for 24 hours. *Or you could place them on a cookie sheet and bake in a 325 degree oven for about 45 minutes to help dry them out.
Dog Powder Mix
1 cup brewer's yeast
1 cup bone meal
1/2 cup kelp powder
1/2 cup alfalfa powder
Mix well add to air-tight container. Keep in freezer if desired. Add one tablespoon to dogs food each day. It's said that brewer's yeast helps to keep the fleas away!
Goulash Dog Food
1 pound ground beef -- *see Note
2 cups cooked brown rice
2 cans vegetables -- *see Note
2 whole eggs -- *see Note
1 can mackerel, canned
2 cloves garlic -- minced
1 pound chicken liver -- or gizzards
Pulverize veggies, either in a blender, processor, grinder, etc. Mix all ingredients together in a big pot. Add enough water to cover, mix well. if you feed raw, which we do, place into containers, enough for one feeding in each, and freeze. We use plastic baggies. If you don't feed raw, cover the pot and simmer for about 2 hrs, stirring occasionally. When it is done cooking, cool, and place into containers or baggies, enough for one feeding in each and freeze. Simply get out in the morning to thaw in the fridge. Note: ground beef, ground turkey, etc. Note: fresh veggies (about 3 cups)- broccoli, asparagus, sweet potatoes, green beans, carrots, spinach, kale. CUT UP. Note: shells crushed and added Dogs get this every evening for dinner, with 1/4-1/2c kibble mixed in, depending on size of dog. feed 1 cup per 15 lbs body weight.
Lhasa Apso Lamb
1 pound lamb, ground -- cooked
2 cups cooked brown rice
2 cups cooked white rice1 cup yogurt, skim milk
4 cloves garlic -- crushed
1/4 cup green beans, frozen -- chopped
1/4 cup carrots, frozen -- chopped
1/4 cup kale, frozen -- chopped
Cook Lamb and drain off excess fat if desired. Defrost frozen veggies, but don't cook them and chop to desired size. In a large bowl mix cooked lamb, cooked rice, chopped vegetables, garlic and yogurt. Slightly heat if desired to serve. Refrigerate or freeze portions in zip lock bags. Should yield 3 to 6 servings.
Meatball Mania
1/2 pound ground beef
2 tablespoons grated cheese
1 carrot -- finely grated
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 cup bread crumbs -- w/w is best
1 egg -- beaten
1/2 tablespoon tomato paste
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine all ingredients together; mix thoroughly. Roll into meatballs - whatever size is appropriate for your dog. Place on a cookie sheet sprayed with non-fat cooking spray. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until they are brown and firm. Cool and store in the fridge or freezer.
Salmon Treats
1 can salmon, canned, pink
1/2 cup chopped parsley
3 eggs -- shells included
1/2 cup sesame seeds -- ground in coffee grinder
1/2 cup flax seeds -- ground in coffee grinder
2 cups potato flour -- (2 to 3)
Put these ingredients into a food processor, mix VERY WELL. Pour potato flour through the opening while the motor is running. I can't tell you exactly how much, but I would guess about 2-3 cups. When the dough forms, like a pie crust, and rolls into a ball it is ready to take out. Dump this mess onto potato floured counter or board. Knead more flour into this and when it is a rolled out cookie consistency, it is ready to roll out into about 14 inch thick. I use a pizza cutter to roll our long strips and then cut crosswise to make small squares . If you want FANCY you may use a cookie cutter. Bake on cookie sheets, sprayed Pam or line the sheet with parchment paper. I put in as many as will fit. Usually two whole cookie sheets suffices. I bake this in a 375º oven for 20 min. Turn and rotate the cookie sheets and bake about 10 more minutes. You can make them as soft or as hard as you want.

Mighty Dog Nation Ratified
That's all fine and good, but I would suggest while visiting the Mighty Dog Nation, you may want to bring some healthy food with you.
The ingredients don't sound that bad at first glance, but the by-product ingredients are what worries me...
Ingredients of Mighty Dog Gourmet dog food:
Beef Broth, Beef, Beef By-Products, Chicken By-Products, Rice Flour, Chicken, Fish Meal, Dried Beet Pulp (sugar removed), Dicalcium Phosphate, Dried Egg Product, Minerals and Vitamins
The FDA found drugs that had been used to euthanize dogs and cats, in dog food several years ago, and I believe that's what initiated this lawsuit. That's one reason I refuse to buy dog food with by-products. FDA report
Nationwide Class Action Lawsuit Filed Against Pet Food Companies and Retailers For Misleading Consumers Regarding the Contents of Pet Food “Premium” Pet Food Marketed and Sold as “Complete and Balanced” Has Historically Contained Such Items as Euthanized Dogs and Cats, Restaurant Grease, Hair, Hooves, and Diseased Animals, and Other Inedible Garbage.
Even though I believe they are probably more careful now, and avoid putting euthanized dogs in dog food, all the yucky stuff considered a hazard for humans to eat, goes into "by-products". I think this is a fun promotion by Purina, but in all honesty, I'll never eat Mighty Dog Food. However, they do have a contest in which you can submit a video of your dog, and win prizes if you want to check it out.
About the Mighty Dog Nation, "It is the union of canines who are Mighty in spirit and bold at heart. It's a place where even the smallest bark can be heard over the noise of the world (including chatty humans, obnoxious cats, and whistling mail carriers). All dogs are welcome here to enjoy their inalienable rights, share their stories and declare their Mightiness -all within a like minded community. As the nation grows, our voice grows stronger, our spirits grow Mightier. We are proud of our Mightiness. It is time to own it and let the world know. Unite with us and be heard."
I just wish Purina could take the resources they are using to create slick advertising campaigns, and instead apply that towards making a healthier dog food.

Jordan: King Abdullah's Beloved Dog

There has been much controversy in the Muslim community over King Abdullah of Jordan rushing his seriously ill dog to an Israeli veterinary hospital, during the time of the Gaza conflict.
The Jordanian royal family's dog was secretly rushed to Israel for treatment in the midst of Operation Cast Lead in Gaza, Yedioth Ahronoth reported Sunday. For many of us, a dog is like a member of the family, and we want to provide the best possible care. For the critics, I would suggest not everything should be, or is politically motivated. If you have a sick dog, you should get veterinarian care. To King Abdullah, I'm sorry for your loss.
Relations between the royal palace in Amman and the Beit Dagan veterinary hospital have been good for many years now.
The Israeli medical team's expertise has served Jordan a number of times, almost always under a heavy veil of secrecy, as per the royal court's request.
During the fighting in the Gaza Strip, the Jordanians once again called on the Israeli veterinarians for help. King Abdullah and Queen Rania's beloved dog had fallen ill.
In a secret operation, the pet was transferred to the hospital in Israel in very poor condition. Full story
Interactive Puzzle Dog Toys

With the interactive puzzle dog toys, your dog must figure out how to find the dog treats that are hidden away in the puzzle. For example with The Dog Brick, your dog will have to slide the compartment covers with his nose and paw to uncover the treats hiding underneath. Interactive puzzle dog toys are gaining in popularity in the U.S., as many dogs seem to enjoy the game. The prices for these types of dog toys typically range from $25-$50.
